Residents want something done about burning landfill

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Residents in the MLK neighborhood are fed up with a privately owned landfill that they say has a history of disruptive fires.

The landfill is located in the 1100 block Russell Road in Shreveport. Harrelson Material Management owns the property.

According to the Shreveport Fire Department, crews have been sent out 15 times since January to control the burning blaze. Fire Officials say the fire has been burning continuously for close to a year.

"The way it is now, my house be full of smoke," says Annie Ealy. Ealy lives in the neighborhood directly behind the landfill. She says the landfill comes with many issues, including smell and smoke.

Members with the Community Development Corporation say they have spent years trying to fix the problem.

"It has escalated and it could have been prevented has the state taken more measures if someone had shut it down," says C.D.C President Irma Rogers.

Rogers says the group has filed a complaint with Louisiana Department of Environmental Equality and filed a lawsuit, but nothing has been done so far.

KSLA News 12 spoke with the owner of the landfill this week when crews went out to respond to a fire, and we were told that a plan in place to take of the issue.
