VAN ZANDT COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -
The Van Zandt County Sheriff's Office says that they received a 911 call on Friday, June 13, from the Wynn Community, near Canton.
The caller said that his father had pointed a firearm at him and threatened to shoot him. His father, Johnny Ray Harris, 40, then forced him out of the residence, which is located on CR 2151. Harris then locked himself inside the residence, the sheriff's office says, with his firearm, and refused to come out to speak to the deputies when they arrived at his home.
Next, it was discovered that Harris was holding a female hostage inside the home; tactical officers from Van Zandt County Sheriff and Canton Police arrived at the scene and were able to get Harris to surrender peacefully. He was taken into custody and taken to the Van Zandt County Justice Center where he was booked in on criminal charges.
Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Michael Bates says that the two agencies recently completed 60 hours of basic SWAT training, and that "This is exactly the way local law enforcement is expected to work together."
