SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Shreveport residents will notice a change in how solid waste is picked up starting in July.

City officials announced via press release Friday that the collection of bulk items such as tree limbs, furniture, appliances and tires will be done by appointment only. Single-family back door collections for a fee will be discontinued.

Other changes include:

- There will be no collection from new (construction permits issued after July 14) residential developments with private driveways with inadequate access for solid waste trucks.

-There will be no collection of solid waste on vacant lots or unoccupied residences unless the property owner arranges for trash pickup.

-All solid waste collected at the curbside must be in containers, except trash collected as part of the bulk program.

-The maximum number of dark green trash carts per residence or commercial establishment is two.

Customers can expect to see the new rules detailed in their upcoming water bills, arriving as soon as Monday. These amendments were adopted by the City Council in April.

Officials said these changes are designed to improve the overall effectiveness of the program. These changes come after it was determined that some residents were abusing the system.

When the issue was brought to light two years ago, the city said sanitation department workers drive past 87,000 houses a day looking for limbs and yard debris. They said it was a waste of time and money.

Residential customers must call (318) 673-6300 to schedule an appointment for bulk items to be picked up.

No additional fee is associated with the upcoming changes. More information is available at www.shreveportla.gov.
