(CNN) – Former astronaut and U.S. Senator John Glenn is recovering from successful heart surgery.
The 92-year-old had a heart valve replaced last month at the Cleveland Clinic, according to a spokesman for the John Glenn School of Public Affairs at the Ohio State University.
He is said to be "in great shape" at his home in Columbus.
Glenn became the first American to orbit earth on February 20, 1962, circling the planet three times in just less than five hours.
He is the last surviving of the original seven U.S. Astronauts from Project Mercury.
Glenn, a democrat, has served as a U.S. Senator from 1974-1999.
He ran for president in 1984.
