KSLA News 12 Editorial: June 10th-Barnwell Center

It was once a jewel along the Red River in Downtown Shreveport.

Since opening in 1970, the Barnwell Center had a lofty goal. It would advance cultural activities in the city of Shreveport. The Barnwell had an art gallery and a domed conservatory filled with tropical plants.

In recent years, the Barnwell has fallen into a state of disrepair. It was no longer a place to bring out of town visitors. It became too expensive to operate. It is now closed.

So, now what?

A number of ideas are being floated including allowing a restaurant to open on the property. I think that would be good idea. Having a restaurant overlooking the Red River on the Shreveport side would be something we could all take advantage of.

But I also think the original mission of the Barnwell Center should be preserved as a center for local artists and as a botanical garden. As the friends of the Barnwell and the City of Shreveport discuss it's future, combining a commercial venture with a public one could be the best way to bring it back to life.

Let me know what you think.
I'm James Smith.

State Police Supt. Col. Mike Edmonson needs to address this inexcusable behavior directly and restore the public's confidence. He should be fully transparent in his investigation into the matter and should invite an outside entity to look into the matter.
