(CNN) - Thousands of military veterans are waiting to receive care at VA facilities across the country.

That's according to a new internal audit released Monday by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

More than 57,000 vets are waiting for care and almost 70,000 have been in the system for the past 10 years, but have not been seen for an appointment.

The audit results come as Congress convenes a hearing into the scandal rocking the nation's military hospitals.

Florida Congressman Jeff Miller heads up the committee on Veterans Affairs and says the next VA director should come from outside the agency.

"Sloan Gibson's doing a great job as the interim. He's only been in the position for about a week. He's only been at the VA for about three months. He's got the capability and he certainly has the attitude, I think, to get in and shake things up inside this culture that's within the system," Miller told CNN.

Gibson took over for Gen. Eric Shinseki, who resigned last week amid growing outrage over the treatment for the nation's vets.
