(CNN) - The leader of Israel and of Palestine came together in a unique meeting at the Vatican Sunday.

Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas committed themselves to the pursuit of peace during a prayer session with Pope Francis.

After prayers in Arabic, Hebrew and Italian by different religious figures each leader offered his own prayer.

Pope Francis says he hopes the meeting will help both sides overcome what divides them as they try and find a way to live together.

"Let's go towards peace, dialogue at all costs. Patience is necessary to move forward day after day," Pope Francis said. "And get stronger and live together in peace and tolerance for the glory of God and for the good of everybody."

The Pope says the meeting is a response to people who want to live as brothers and sisters and not as enemies.

Both leaders had a chance to meet together privately with the pope after the prayer ceremony in the gardens of the Vatican.
