BELMONT, NY (CNN) - The Triple Crown remains an elusive dream as California Chrome's bid for the third jewel in the crown fell flat Saturday at the Belmont Stakes.

The 3-year-old stag just couldn't go the distance, finishing fifth.

Tonalist was the horse to beat, winning the purse.

That means the 36-year-drought in Triple Crown winners continues.

In the 134-year history of the grueling series - the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes - only 11 horses have won all three.

Affirmed was the last horse to do it in 1978.
