Blues Brother lends a helping hand

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Actor Dan Aykroyd is once again in the Capital City, but there aren't any film cameras rolling on this trip. Instead, he's rallying people around the Hinds County Sheriff's Department.

Aykroyd joined the Bluz Boys onstage at the Old Capitol Inn, and he did it for a good cause.   Hinds County Sheriff's Department spokesman Othor Cain said proceeds from the event will go to help the department's reserve unit.

Aykroyd purchased a new vehicle for the Hinds County Sheriff's Department earlier Thursday.   Then after that, he was the centerpoint of a fundraising reception for Sheriff Tyrone Lewis' re-election campaign at a private residence.

Now, he'll be channeling his inner "Elwood Blues" with local musicians, helping Hinds County deputies in the process.

"These men and women have other careers, other lives, and they volunteer their time 100 percent," said Cain. "They're asked to work at least sixteen hours a month. And they have to pay for their own equipment. "They have to pay for their vests, they have to pay for their guns, all of that stuff. So we're hopeful that the funds raised will offset that."

There's much more on the way for the actor and Hinds County reserve deputy in the next few days. Cain said Aykroyd will be riding with Hinds County deputies Friday to see the entire county.

The former Blues Brother is also slated to perform at the Medgar Evers Homecoming Blues Concert at the Regency Hotel and Conference Center Saturday night.
