LYNCHBURG, OH (FOX19) -

This is the doppler radar age when it comes to warning for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms.

Before doppler radar we looked for the hook echo on a "regular" radar display.

The first image from the National Weather Service Nexrad Doppler Radar. It is what you normally see when I show you radar. It shows how hard it is raining.

So you can pick out the supercell thunderstorm better see it I outlined the thunderstorm and the hook.

Before doppler that's all we had.

The second image shows what doppler sees. Red indicates air motion away from the radar to the north in Wilmington and green shows where air is moving towards the radar.

The close up shows the tornado circulation and doppler radar allows us to pinpoint where the tornado is.
