Candlelight vigil held to remember boy who drowned in Benton lake

Dozens of people came out Thursday evening for a prayer vigil in remembrance of 7-year-old Dawton Smith, who drowned on Memorial Day weekend at Cypress Black Bayou Park and Recreation Area.

Dawton's death has been ruled an accidental drowning.

Family and friends of the boy met at the King's Manor Apartments for a candlelight vigil and to pray in his remembrance.

"Those who can not bring themselves to terms to go to his funeral, much less terms that he is gone, and that we won't see him here on Earth no more," Dawton's mother Alicia Smith said of the event.

Dawton suffered from epilepsy and severe cysts on his spinal cord.

"Personally as a grandmother, I want to thank each and everyone of ya'll, who have donated in anyway to help us bury my grandchild," said Dawton's grandmother Shirley Ellerbe.

Funeral services for Dawton are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at the Rose-Neath Southside Chapel.
