BOSSIER PARISH, LA (KSLA) -

The owner of an ArkLaTex daycare was arrested Wednesday morning on charges saying she assaulted more than a dozen children.

Assistant Haughton Police Chief Ricky Bridges said 49-year-old Bonnie Mathes, the owner of Angel Town Day Care, was booked into the Bossier Parish Maximum Security Facility on 17 counts of cruelty to a juvenile and 9 counts of simple battery.

A release from the Haughton Police Department said they along with State Child Protection and the Bossier Parish District Attorney's office investigated claims of child abuse and assault at the daycare. According to Bridges, the 17 children involved were both boys and girls ranging in age from 8 months to 5 years.

Bridges also said investigators believe Mathes used a wooden spoon to strike the children, but they were possibly injured by other means as well.

The investigation began in January when police say they began getting complaints from parents and employees. Bridges indicated police have physical evidence to support the allegations, but would give any details.

The daycare was apparently already shut down because of financial reasons, not due to the investigation.
