BENTON, LA (KSLA) -

The drowning death of a child Monday at a Benton park has been ruled an accident, and signs near the water advise the public that they swim at their own risk.

On Memorial Day, 7-year-old Dawton Smith wandered off from his family before he went into the water at Cypress Black Bayou in Bossier Parish.

People with him quickly noticed that he was missing, and park rangers say the child's body was found shortly thereafter in just 3 to 4 feet of water.

Signs posted along the beach warn swimmers that there are no lifeguards on duty.

Park management and rangers say they are mourning for the family and for the young boy, and wish they could've prevented the tragedy.

Deputy Josh Cagle says an off-duty Shreveport paramedic attempted CPR at the time, but the child did not respond.
