Woman stabbed, elderly man taken into custody at E. 71 St. house

A woman is in the hospital Tuesday afternoon after she was stabbed at a home in South Shreveport, allegedly by an elderly man she was caring for.

Police said the victim was stabbed multiple times inside a house in the 600 block of E. 71st Street. An older man, identified by his family as 75-year-old Walter Smith, was taken into custody. It appears that the victim was his caretaker, Cpl. Marcus Hines said.

Both victim and suspect were taken to University Health Shreveport, Hines said. The victim is in stable condition, but her injuries are considered serious.

Smith was taken in handcuffs as a precaution because he has pre-existing medical concerns. Hines said police are going through his medical records trying to confirm the state of his health.

Deborah Coleman is the suspect's niece. She identified him as Walter Smith, saying he has a "long list" of health problems including prostate cancer and hypertension.

The family also believes he suffers from mental health problems, though he has not yet been diagnosed with any, Coleman said.

When she saw Smith after the stabbing, he told her that he "flipped out." Coleman said Smith threatened to harm himself last month.

Coleman believes the victim has been Smith's caretaker for the past six months. They believe she is in her 40s.

An eyewitness said he heard a woman outside screaming for help. He approached the house and saw the suspect inside laying on the floor and yeller for someone to call 911.

Police cars are still on the scene and are blocking the road between Liberty Street and Line Avenue.
