BENTON, LA (KSLA) -

A child who drowned at Cypress Bayou Reservoir in Bossier Parish Monday afternoon has been identified.

Family members confirm to KSLA News 12 that the victim is 7-year-old Dawton Smith.  His father tells us that Dawton loved to fish and spend time outdoors.  He reportedly wandered away from his family while they were in the lake on Memorial Day.

Authorities say numerous bystanders made an organized line to search for the child.  Dawton was found and pulled from the lake.

An off-duty Shreveport paramedic attempted to help by performing CPR on Dawton, but he was not able to be resuscitated.

His father tells KSLA News 12 that Dawton would have been a third grader at Atkins Elementary in Shreveport next school year.

Funeral services are pending, but the family is asking for help paying for those expenses. If you can help, head to Community Bank of Louisiana, 9201 Walker Road Branch in Shreveport. You can make checks payable to: For the Benefit of Dawton Lee Justice Smith
