SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, CA (CNN) - More details about the man accused in Friday night's deadly drive-by shootings in southern California have been released.

An attorney for Elliot Rodger's family says relatives contacted authorities weeks ago after discovering social media posts about suicide and killing people.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff says deputies spoke with Rodger, but found no indication he was violent.

But, the sheriff says it's clear now that there was something wrong.

"Mr. Rodger was, although deeply disturbed, he was able to put on a front as it were and convince them, and obviously convince a lot of other people, that he didn't have problems so severe that it would require some fairly extreme intervention by mental health professionals," said Sheriff Bill Brown. "He, obviously, had been treated for quite some time by mental health care professionals. He had been prescribed medication. He had a severe underlying mental illness."

Authorities say Rodger killed six people and hurt 13 others before apparently shooting himself in the head.

He's also accused of killing three men at his apartment.

Authorities say it appears Rodger had been planning the attacks for more than a year.
