Concern over a growing heroin epidemic in Henrico County. We spoke to recovering addict who says the problem than you might realize.
28-year-old Glen McMillan Jr., a young Henrico father, is now facing child endangerment and drug charges - after police take out a search warrant they discovered heroin, marijuana, and syringes...in his home.
"It's not surprising at all. Heroin is the biggest epidemic we've got right now," said Marjorie Yates.
Yates is with the Substance Abuse and Addiction Recovery Alliance. She says she's seen more and more people are coming to the office seeking help with a heroin addiction.
"And yes, a much younger group. It used to be older people, and now it's a much younger group," she said.
For 21-year-old Brittany Horchak, a recovering heroin addict, this program has been a godsend - she says turning back now is not an option.
"I may kill myself and die from the drugs that are out there right now. I mean the heroin is four times stronger," Brittany said.
And as McMillan's charges illustrate...Brittany says even the West End is not immune to the lure of heroin.
"I mean Richmond, Chesterfield, Henrico...it didn't matter what county it was. They were mostly middle class neighborhoods," she said.
And according to these documents...police found McMillan at a home where an acquaintance was suffering from an apparent drug overdose.
"I mean if you are still in active addiction your only ending is jails, institutions or death. And a life of recovery is amazing. You just have to put in the work," Brittany told us.
Police say McMillan admitted smoking marijuana. He claims he was not high the night he was arrested.
