Cousins found guilty in 2012 rape, robbery of home health worker

Two cousins were found guilty Friday of the aggravated rape, aggravated kidnapping and armed robbery of a home health nurse in 2012.

Before jury selection, the district attorney had offered a 30-year sentence to Glenn Elliot and a 25-year sentence to Jermaine Rumley as a package deal, but Rumley refused the offer. Now both men, who were tried together, will be sentenced to life in prison.

The former healthcare worker, who was 53 at the time of the crime, gave emotional and graphic testimony Thursday as she described the day she was robbed and gang raped in an abandoned house.

It took jurors less than two hours to reach a verdict.

District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro's office issued the following news release detailing the crime:

On January 26th, 2012, the victim, who is a home healthcare nurse, was in her car in the Zion City neighborhood near the home of one of her patients. Darren Holmes, David Quinn, Glen Elliot, and Jermaine Rumley had just finished smoking marijuana in an abandoned apartment building and had decided that they would perform a robbery.

After they unsuccessfully attempted to rob some Hispanic residents in the neighborhood, they happen upon the victim in her vehicle near the intersection of Thalia and Erato. Darren Holmes and Glen Elliot approach the victim's vehicle armed with handguns. Darren Holmes enters the vehicle of the victim and forces her to drive away.

He leads her to an abandoned home in the 1300 block of South Gayoso Street a short distance away. Holmes takes the victim into the home at gunpoint and forces her to perform oral sex. Quinn, Elliot, and Rumley find the vehicle in the driveway of the abandoned house. They proceed to steal contents from the vehicle including the victim's wallet, cell phone, and tablet computer.

Quinn, Elliot, and Rumley then enter the home. Elliot and Rumley proceeded to rape the victim. DNA testing established that seminal fluid from Elliot was found in the body and clothing of the victim.

David Quinn pled guilty to armed robbery and received an 18 year prison sentence. Pursuant to his plea agreement he was required to testify at trial. Darren Holmes pled guilty to Forcible Rape, Second Degree Kidnapping, and Armed Robbery. Holmes received a 40 year sentence and will receive no ‘good time' reduction in his sentence on the Forcible Rape conviction.

Assistant District Attorneys Robert Moore and Payal Patel prosecuted the case.

In response to this conviction, District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro stated, "This was a truly horrific crime. The NOPD and my office were able to build a very strong case. As a result, one codefendant agreed to serve a very lengthy prison sentence and cooperate in the investigation. A second codefendant agreed to plead guilty to a 40 year prison sentence. Elliott and Rumley were unwilling to take any responsibility for their action and will now be spending the rest of their lives in jail."

The defendants will be sentenced on June 19th. State law mandates that they be sentenced to life in prison without probation, parole or suspension of sentence.
