Storm leads to major flooding on I-95, across RVA

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Thursday's storm dropped a lot of rain. Many Richmonders got caught in flash flooding on the interstate.

NBC 12 viewers sent photos and video of I-95N by Belvidere covered in flood water. Managers at 8 1/2 Canal Street apartments also battled a growing wall of water.

"We were doing our best to try to stop it from leaking in," said leasing agent Danny Fogerty who notes the water came and went in about 30 minutes. "It seemed longer because we were in here running around."

Viewers also sent us images of emergency crews dodging flooded streets near Willow Lawn. There was extensive flooding on Fairmount and Mechanicsville Turnpike and along Harrison and Franklin.

The wet weather made for a scary ride home for many in the area.

"Pretty sure that's the closest I've ever felt to thinking I was going to die," said motorist Taylor Brooke.

The Squirrels baseball field was also flooded for a short time Thursday.

"It will be game ready for the 1st pitch at 7:05," said Steve Ruckman who is Director of Sports Turf for the Richmond Flying Squirrels baseball club.

A deadly virus is threatening the crawfish industry in Southwest Louisiana. It's called white spot syndrome virus and it was first discovered in Thailand, but somehow it made its way to ponds in South Louisiana and specialists are struggling to find the funds to research a solution.  “The catch was increasing and increasing and then it dropped 70% and that's when you saw the dead crawfish floating in the water,” said a crawfish farmer of 34 years, Ian Garbarino.
