JP boaters call for Bonnabel Boat Launch improvements

METAIRIE, LA (WVUE) -
There's a hidden gem in Jefferson Parish that could really get busy this holiday weekend. The Bonnabel Boat Launch has turned into a family recreation park, but some say the parish still has more work to do out there.
"This one has been closed for a year," said boater Nathan Cusimano, as he gestures at a blocked-off boat launch. "They haven't made any effort to fix it. Saturdays and Sundays, it gets very packed here."
Cusimano is one of many who want to see all four of the launches open to the public. Right now, one is completely closed off and a second can only be used to launch smaller or flat-bottom boats.
Jefferson Parish said the launches are old, and all four need to be replaced. It's a project that will cost about $600,000, and the parish currently has a third of that saved up. Jefferson Parish President John Young said redeveloping the area is a priority.
Over the past five years, the parish has redone the dog park near the launches. It has also added the Tot Lot, a playground, on the lakefront.
"There's a lot of recreational activities along the lakefront," said Young. "We're going to continue to try to look at ways to develop that."
The parish says the boat launch project is currently in the design phase. Work is scheduled to start in January 2015.
