A group of people working to bring back the true meaning of Memorial Day made their way through Texarkana Thursday.
The group, part of the effort "Carry the Load," started walking in New York and are hoping to be in Dallas by the holiday.
On Thursday, they walked along State Line Avenue, which separates Arkansas from Texas. They wielded the American flag.
Carry the Load was founded by Clint Bruce, a former Navy SEAL who lost friends in combat and wanted to restore what Memorial Day was originally meant for - to honor fallen soldiers.
Memorial Day began on May 5, 1866 in Waterloo, NY. It came to be celebrated on May 30 by the end of the 1800s. A national moment of silence is observed each Memorial Day at 3 p.m. local time.
