MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC) - A Memphis DJ ended up behind bars after police say a graduation party got out of hand. Neighbors of the downtown venue say it reached riot proportions and the venue owner admits she had to shut it down.

Police say an over-capacity crowd filled the building plus the sidewalks outside.

Teresa Peete blames her sleepless night on the party billed as the Dream Ball, which burst at the seams. It caused what responding police officers described as mass chaos.

"It was a lot of confusion, a lot of cursing, lot of loud noise. It was terrible," said Peete. "It's really a good building, and they usually have nice things going on, but Saturday it was terrible"

Robert Young, aka DJ Yo, was charged with inciting a riot. Police say the 20-year-old rented The Bradford, an event space housed inside the Deluxe Arcade building. More than 700 young people tried to pack a space meant for fewer than 300.

Chastity Ward owns The Bradford and made the decision to end the Dream Ball before it became a nightmare.

"We've had close to, I'd say, 100 events since we've been open and never had a problem," she said.

She says DJ Yo failed to adhere to capacity constraints in his contract and may have oversold the event.

"I do think he should step up and apologize to his fans," said Ward.

Despite numerous fights police say they witnessed outside, there were no reports of serious injuries.

Police say DJ Yo had five security guards at the event; Young tweeted that he had 11.

Young is out of jail on bond. He said he was not interested in talking on camera.
