Numbers look good for SWAR charter school

The Washington Academy Charter School in Texarkana, Arkansas is finishing its first year on the books.

The school's doors were opened last September to a select 120 students from the Texarkana, AR School District.

Academy Director Terry Taylor said the school was designed to give students personalized attention, to improve the graduation rate, and to help students complete school early.

Although the official report on this charter school has not been sent to the state board of education, Taylor said he gives students and teachers high marks.

"We have increased the graduation," he said. "We have lowered the drop out rate. Those were the two most important things, why we were established here in this community, to try and make sure we improve on and we have done that."

Applications are being taken through June for next year's classes. Taylor said there is space for 140 students. Parents can get an application at the school, 1900 Marietta Street, Texarkana.
