Sheriff: Scammers using deputy's name to solicit donations

BOWIE COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - East Texas authorities are warning the public about scammers who are using a deputy's name in an attempt to get donations.

The Bowie County Sheriff's Office said an unknown person has been calling local businesses to solicit donations for the sheriff's office. This caller is pretending to be Jim Nelson, a reserve deputy with the sheriff's office.

The caller is leaving the phone numbers 903-686-0242 and 903-686-2042 as contact numbers. Both of these phone numbers have Longview area codes, but neither of them are working numbers.

All area residents should be aware that this is a scam and they should not give out any information to anyone who calls pretending to be this deputy. The Bowie County Sheriff's Office said they never call anyone to solicit donations and anyone who has a question about receiving a call from someone at the sheriff's office should call 903-798-3149 or 911.
