Deputies in Perquimans County have charged six brothers and their parents in connection with the sexual abuse of a girl over the course of almost a decade.
Perquimans County Sheriff Eric Tilley told WAVY-TV that the brothers were arrested May 6 and charged with crimes related to raping a 4-year-old girl until she was almost 15. The victim is now 16 years old, Tilley said.
It was not immediately clear how the family knew the victim.
Tilley said investigators were tipped off about the crimes in December 2012 when one of the brothers told his pastor about the alleged abuse. He later also confessed to the Perquimans County Sheriff's Office.
After another brother came forward about the crimes, indictments were handed up on April 24.
During the time of the abuse, Tilley said the brothers lived with their parents in a secluded house in Hertford. On at least one occasion, one of the brothers told deputies that his mother witnessed the abuse but walked away.
Tilley said Nita Jackson and her husband, 65-year-old John Jackson, were each charged with felony child neglect for failing to take action to stop the abuse.
Matthew Jackson, 23, was charged with five counts of rape of a child.
Eric Jackson, 27, was charged with three counts of rape of a child, three counts of statutory rape of a child less than 6 years old and three counts of sex offense.
Nathaniel Jackson, 21, was charged with two counts of first degree sexual offense and three counts of statutory rape.
Benjamin Jackson, 19, and Aaron Jackson, 19, were each charged with three counts of statutory rape.
And 25-year-old Jon Jackson was charged with first degree sex offense.
The brothers, who Tilley said were home schooled and do not have much education, are being held in Albemarle District Jail under secured bonds of up to $200,000 each.
Their parents bonded out of jail, each on a $15,000 secured bond.
