NEW RICHMOND, OH (FOX19) -

Authorities said a Clermont County teenager was charged early Monday for allegedly stabbing another teen over threatening text messages involving a girl.

Clayton Welch, 19, of Bethel, was arrested on one count of felonious assault and booked into the Clermont County Jail.

New Richmond police were dispatched at about 2:15 a.m. to the Riverview Apartments in the 1000 block of Bethel New Richmond Road for a stabbing in the parking lot. Authorities said Preston Graybill, 19, was found in his apartment with a stab wound in his side.

Graybill identified the suspect to police as Welch and said the confrontation started as "taunting and threatening text messages over a mutually liked girlfriend."

Graybill was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for his injuries. His condition was not released.

Police said the suspect initially fled on foot but was picked up in a vehicle by his girlfriend who was also there during the incident. Welch was located at his residence on South Union Street shortly after the altercation.

Welch told police that he threw the folding knife used to stab the victim in a wooded area behind the apartment building, which was eventually located by New Richmond's canine unit.

Welch was expected to be arraigned Monday morning.
