TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A man was killed in an officer-involved shooting in Eloy early Sunday morning.

The man killed was 25-year-old Victor Arenas.

An Eloy Police officer was investigating a burglary in an Eloy neighborhood around 4:00 a.m. when he was met outside a home by Arenas, according to Sgt Brian Gerome with Eloy Police Department.

Arenas' girlfriend, Gabriella Torres, said that Victor went outside because he heard someone in the yard and saw a flashlight. Arenas grabbed his gun and went outside.

"To protect his family, his house," she said. "He didn't know if it was a cop. He didn't know if it was a burglar."

Gunfire was exchanged. The number of shots fired and who shot them is still under investigation, but Gerome said Arenas was hit once. He ran to the backyard and collapsed, according to Gerome.

Arenas leaves behind two daughters, ages 4 and 5. Torres said the girls were staying with their grandparents for the night.

"We have to tell those kids that your dad's no longer here," she said.

The officer involved performed CPR on Arenas until EMS arrived. He was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to Gerome.

Eloy Police are not releasing the name of the officer involved, but the officer has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.

Pinal County Sheriff's Department has taken over the investigation and Eloy Police are conducting an internal investigation regarding the incident, which is standard procedure.

Friends and family have created a memorial for Arenas outside of his home in Eloy.
