Balloon festival events canceled, future events unlikely

Posted: Updated:

The field at Meadow Event Park, once filled with balloons and dozens of spectators, now has only packed tents behind the locked gates.

"I was real saddened last night when I heard there was an accident and we just have major prayers for the family and hope everyone is okay," said Sarah Frazier, who was looking forward to a getaway with her husband at this weekend's balloon festival. They even had plans to take a trip in a hot air balloon. "Our plan was to just go out this afternoon and I was convincing my husband to go up in a balloon, because I've done it before, but he is not going to do it now."

Instead, tragedy struck when this balloon struck a power line while trying to land and burst into flames, killing three and prompting organizer to cancel all remaining festival events.

Balloon festival organizers say the most important thing right now is the three victims and their family. Looking ahead to the future, they say it is unlikely that there will be another balloon festival at Meadow Event Park.

"Prayers go out to the victims and their families. Meadow Event Park staff is devastated by this just a shocking situation for everyone," Greg Hicks said.

Alternative plans are in the works for people who purchased festival tickets but were not able to attend. As the investigation takes center stage, many say they just want answers and closure for family members.
