OTTAWA, May 9, 2014 /CNW/ - Today, the Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of Veterans Affairs, issued the following statement in recognition of the National Day of Honour, marking the end of the Canadian mission in Afghanistan.

"As Canadians, we can look back on our contributions and achievements in Afghanistan with tremendous pride, knowing that we have helped make a difference in the lives of many people.

"We also know that these achievements have been hard won. We will forever remember the courage and valour of our Canadian Armed Forces members, and especially the loss of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

"The determination, courage and devotion of our military members has not gone unnoticed and has garnered international respect for Canada-instilling in Canadians a sense of national pride that unites us all.

"I encourage everyone to take time today to pause and reflect on the peace and freedoms that we hold so dear, and to thank from the bottom of their hearts our Canadian Armed Forces members, both past and present."
