ELMWOOD PLACE, OH (FOX19) -

Police are investigating a murder-suicide in Elmwood Place after a man and a woman were found dead in an apartment on Thursday.

A man told police something was suspicious after not hearing from his father, Zarrel West, all day, according to authorities. Police then responded to West's apartment in the 6600 block of Hasler Lane on Thursday evening.

Police found West, 59, in the middle of the floor with a single gunshot wound to the head. Fallon Hale, 30, was also found shot in the head. The relationship between to two has not been revealed, but Lt. Kevin Vanover said it's being investigated as a murder-suicide.

This is not the first time police have been to West's home this week. Authorities said they made a call to the apartment on Wednesday for reports of a stolen firearm.

"We're not sure if it's connected at this time. We're still trying to put all the pieces together," said Elmwood Police Chief William Peskin.

A loaded .357 caliber weapon was located inside the home on Thursday near the deceased bodies, according to police.

"We've had plenty of shootings, but nothing of this nature," said Peskin of incidents like this in Elmwood Place.

Authorities say an investigating is ongoing with the help of Hamilton County coroner.

In order to get some perspective on murder suicides, FOX19 talked with University of Cincinnati forensic psychologist Dr. Scott Bresler who says most people who commit these types of acts are very controlling or mentally ill or they're angry.

"Now they come in different contexts," he said. "We see them sometimes in people who are thinking clearly or are extremely irate like a disgruntled worker and that's why you often see workplace violence cases in which somebody will perpetrate a kill or a multiple kill and then turn the gun on themselves."

Deborah Jones says she knew West and something of his troubled past.

"He was messed up in the head a little bit from the military, but he was OK," said Jones. "He used to be an alcoholic, but he was recovering."

Police say West and Hale both have had contact with law enforcement, but at this time it's not clear if their criminal histories had anything to do with this murder suicide.
