New Orleans council approves controversial high rise

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

The New Orleans City Council approves controversial plans to build condos at the old Holy Cross school site in the Ninth Ward.

About 50 people who do not support the development protested at City Hall before Thursday morning's meeting.

Despite the protest, the council voted 5-to-1 in favor of the development.

Councilman Jason Williams cast the only "no" vote. Despite the council's decision, Ninth Ward residents like Vanessa Gueringer say their fight is not over.

"We're very, very upset that this is going to move forward, but it has been voted on and with that said, it's not over. They still have to work with the community that has been in opposition of this project from the very beginning," she said.

Council members say with the changes made to the zoning ordinance, the development will be an important economic engine for the Ninth Ward.
