TEXARKANA, TX (KSLA) -

The annual Texarkana, TX police officer memorial day and appreciation ceremony was held Wednesday morning, and for the sponsoring agency, the event was personal.

"Police Officer William Jason Sprague, Texarkana, Texas Police Department. End of watch June 15, 2013."

The name of a fallen officer was read aloud.

Texarkana, Texas police officers and other area law enforcement were on hand to recognize Sprague, who was killed last year while on duty. He and 12 other officers in the State of Texas were honored for paying the ultimate price.

Sprague's family, including his 5-year-old son Caden received the Texarkana, TX police cross.

"To commemorate the service of the man or woman who lost their life in the performance of their duty protecting and serving their community," said Chief Dan Shiner.

Marcae Green, Sprague's mother, was pleased with the service.

"I thought it was a great tribute," she said. "I am very blessed to have the Texarkana department and the Arkansas department showed many blessings and support."

And for young Caden, a special gift from Texarkana Mayor Bob Bruggeman.

"This is for you," he told the boy. "I got this for you and I wanted you to have this as a gift."

It meant the world to Caden's mom, Stephanie Sprague.

"To see Caden's face and how proud he is of his daddy and to recognize all these guys and to be so excited, it means a lot to me as a mom," she said.

The event was the sixth year the Texarkana, TX Police Department has sponsored the peace officer memorial day, another day Stephanie Sprague says is very much appreciated.

"I have said it time and time again, that it is amazing how much of a brotherhood we have, how much a family we have here and today just solidified that," she said.

Officer Sprague will also be recognized during a ceremony in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday at the National Police Officer Memorial Day.
