Politifact Virginia: Cantor's ad attacks David Brat

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Congressman Eric Cantor is hitting his primary opponent, David Brat, hard with a new ad attacking Brat's role on a economic council that advised then democratic Governor Tim Kaine.

"Brat worked on democrat Gov. Tim Kaine's council of economic advisers while Kaine tried to raise our taxes by over $1 billion," said the ad.

Did Brat work on a Kaine council at the same time Kaine submitted a proposal for a big tax increase? According to Politifact that claim is "mostly true".

Yes, those two things did happen, at the same time, but according to Politifact Virginia reporter
Sean Gorman the Cantor ad stops short of saying Brat, or the council, actually encouraged those tax hikes.

"Well Cantor's ad, doesn't explicitly connect those two things. However by mentioning them in the same sentence it does create an unfair impression that Brat served on a panel that advised Kaine on tax policy when there is no evidence that, that occurred," Goramn said.
