2-alarm fire damages several 7th Ward homes

A two-alarm fire damaged several homes in the Seventh Ward Thursday.

The fire broke out just before 2:30 p.m. in the 1800 block of Duels Street. Firefighters arrived to find flames shooting through the roof of a single-story, wood-framed house, with multi-unit buildings on either side also damaged.

Fourteen NOFD units carrying 45 firefighters responded, and the blaze was under control at 3:15 p.m. No one was injured. Firefighters rescued two dogs from one of the adjacent buildings.

The house where the fire started had no utilities and had been abandoned and unoccupied since Hurricane Katrina.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
