Dale Fitzpatrick, 50, and Grant McDaniel, 31, were each booked with possession and possession with intent to distribute the drug, also known as "laughing gas." The incident occurred at 3:50 a.m. in the 500 block of Frenchmen Street.
For the past several days, detectives received information from residents and business owners about several people selling nitrous oxide-filled balloons, according to a release from the New Orleans Police Department. On April 25, officers found Fitzpatrick with a tank of the gas and issued him a summons, police said.
On Thursday, when detectives responding to another call of a man selling the balloons again found Fitzpatrick with a nitrous tank, they arrested him. Later that morning, detectives went back to the area and saw McDaniel selling the balloons. He fled on foot, but was caught after a brief chase.
During their investigation, detectives discovered that both men were using a car parked at Elysian Fields Avenue and Chartres Street. Detectives obtained a search warrant and found 11 full tanks of the gas.
