More than $2 million was seized and thousands of dollars worth of synthetic drugs were taken off of the street during an Upstate, 24-hour drug raid Thursday.
Easley police started the investigation into the illegal sale of synthetic drugs a year ago when they began to get complaints about teens buying the drugs and becoming sick.
"It's a synthetic drug that sometimes mimics marijuana," said Pickens County Sheriff Rick Clark. "Sometimes it's a lot worse."
"A mother had two sons that went and got some of this junk, this trash and one of them went unconscious and one of them stayed in a coma for almost 2 days," Clark said. "That's why we're here today because of those two kids and things that happen to all the others, mostly young people, across the nation."
Following undercover buys and the lengthy investigation, Easley police raided Sky's Tha Limit along U.S. 123 in Easley Thursday, where a few people were seen handcuffed out front, according to FOX Carolina's crew at the scene.
While police raided that store, investigators simultaneously served search warrants at several other stores in Anderson, Pickens and Oconee counties.
Authorities said one Pickens County family owned the stores in question and seven people were arrested during the raid Thursday.
Hundreds of pounds of drugs, 25 cars and other property were seized during the execution of seven simultaneous search warrants Thursday. Investigators also seized a total of $2.7 million in cash and bank accounts, according to solicitor Walt Wilkins.
Wilkins said Charles Greer imported the chemicals from China and manufactured it into the Scheduled I drug, selling it to the family distributing the drugs at local stores. Greer was not located Thursday and is wanted on at least one count of drug conspiracy.
Police said Carrie Pilgrim Barbary, Brandi Childress, James Barbary, James Pilgrim, Sabrina Jenkins, John Stanfield and Wendy Jenkins were all arrested in the busts.
They face charges that range from drug distribution to drug conspiracy.
