High Dollar Homes: Explore a Mediterranean masterpiece

It's like a vacation every day - that's how some describe life on Lake Pontchartrain. A home in Lakeshore Estates built around what the water has to offer has a "wow" factor around every corner.

"It's a grandiose house, it's a grandiose setting," said Suzy McDaniel of Dorian Bennett, Sotheby's. "It's a statement house."

The gray stucco masterpiece is one of many jewels on Lakeshore Drive in Slidell. The interior may bowl you over. The foyer soars to unbelievable heights. The 30-foot ceilings are an introduction of what's to come.

"The chandeliers are all imported from Europe," McDaniel said. "They are fabulous chandeliers. The iron work on the staircase is all imported from Europe."

The details are rich and the flow is easy into a dining room that shows off more impressive lighting. The gourmet kitchen is bathed in dark wood and granite. The kitchen opens to a gracious living room and breakfast nook. Water is art here, visible through a wall of windows.

The master bedroom is regal. Opulent furnishings welcome you after a stressful day. The master bath is large, stocked with a soaking tub and a sauna off the shower.

Step outside to layers of water. A fountain is first. Comfortable outdoor areas are great to watch the sunrise and sunset. Walk a little more into this backyard paradise and you'll find a pool, perfect for summer parties. Keep going, and you can spend hours in a gazebo. That's a rest stop for the next part of your journey - the boathouse.

"Just the opportunity to be on Lake Pontchartrain with the boathouse out there, you can catch your fish, clean your fish, cook your fish and then eat it. You don't ever have to bring the fish inside," McDaniel said.

The boat dock can accommodate the grandest yacht. A canal acts as protective water before you get to the open lake. Look back toward the house and you'll see how far you've come. Balconies wrap around the house. You can see everything from the decks below to the expansive lake.

On the second floor, enter the house upstairs into a bright hallway with more surprises. The big game room up there is fabulous and there are various wet bars throughout the home.

There's a home theatre on the third floor, and getting back down to ground level is no problem. There's an elevator, too.

You can "live large" in a house that is.

"It's 9,024 total square feet including all the porches and the garage," McDaniel said. "It's a really special house with a lot of special features."
