WOODFIN, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Emergency crews rescued and evacuated several residents in the Woodfin community Tuesday morning, according to emergency management officials.

Buncombe County Emergency Management said crews performed a water rescue and evacuated other residents in Woodfin in the area of Weaverville Road as waters from Beaver Dam Creek rose.

Capt. Chris Dorsey with Woodfin Fire Department said they were called to the scene about 3 a.m. Crews first rescued three people from their flooded homes by boat. They were assisted by several other local fire and rescue teams.

He said they also assisted several elderly residents in leaving their homes. A few people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, Dorsey said.

Firefighters had to rescue 10 people from their homes as waters rose quickly Tuesday morning and the American Red Cross is helping 24 people affected by the flooding.

A spokesperson for the Red Cross said they were assisting 21 people with temporary housing and two people who were taken to the hospital. The Red Cross said one person has declined help.

The spokesperson said there are still some homes up the river they are keeping an eye to see what happens as the storms continue.

Firefighters are urging people in the area to stay off the roads and away from the Weaverville Highway area because of the continued rainfall and flooding.
