Cops taking action against prostitution with technology

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Following an undercover sting that netted 16 prostitution arrest, cops say they used the web site Backpage.com to help in the operation.

In Wednesday's operation, Police say all of the people arrested contacted undercover officers through backpage.com. They say using the site in undercover operations is only one way to help lower the prostitution statistics in the city.

So do sites with sections to solicit sex make prostitution easier?

"I don't think it makes it any easier than driving down to Sprague Street," says Shreveport Resident Andrew Ameen.

Ameen is not the only person who does not think these sites make a difference in sex crimes.

If people want this they are probably going to get it from somewhere," says Shreveport Resident Michael Cade.

Some politicians think otherwise.

Last month, House Resolution 4225 was introduced to Congress. If passed, it would provide a penalty for knowingly selling advertising that offers certain commercial sex acts.

In 2010, Craigslist abandoned its section soliciting for sex.
