When you think about celebrating Easter, you may think about candy, bunnies or dying eggs. One Biloxi bakery has many people thinking of delicious pastries, cakes, and hot cross buns. And they've been doing it for nine decades! The Electrik Maid Bake Shop is celebrating 90 years of baking.
"It's always been good. It doesn't seem to have changed at all," said Julie Capuano.
She's been bringing her family to Electrik Maid Bake Shop for as long as she can remember. Now, when her daughters come home for Easter weekend, there's only one way to celebrate.
"I have to come and get the Electrik Maid for their visit home," said Capuano with a smile.
The tradition is something that her youngest daughter, Anna Landry, is very fond of.
"I always look forward to the sisters coming and that's a big sign of them coming. Going to the Electrik Maid," said Landry.
Going to Electrik Maid is like taking a step back in time. Not a lot has changed over the years. The baked goods are still made from scratch, and that's the way the customers like it.
"It's like when I was a child," said a customer of two months, Carol Porter.
When it comes to baking, this business is a family affair. It's been passed down for four generations. The owner's mother, Nona Balius, said the key to a successful 90 years was not worrying about keeping up with changing trends. Along with the business, her father-in-law passed a bit of philosophy down, as well.
"My father in law always said, if you please your customers and put good, quality, food out, they'll always come back," said Balius.
That philosophy has been keeping customers coming through the door again, and again, for years.
The Electrik Maid Bake Shop first opened its doors on Howard Avenue in downtown Biloxi in 1924.
