HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

For the second time in four-years the Southern Pines Animal Shelter has been selected to compete in the 100K ASPCA Rachael Ray Challenge.

During the months of June, July, and August the shelter will attempt to adopt out as many as 1500 cats and dogs. If they are able to accomplish their goal they could win from $5000 to $100,000. The shelter has several adoption events scheduled for this summer to help them reach their goal.

Shelter Manager Ginny Sims says this time around they're going to be doing bigger adoption events and for them to be a success volunteers are going to be vital.

"Volunteers are going to be such an important piece to the puzzle and that includes fostering," said Sims. "Fostering is just a really beautiful way to send an animal off to their forever home. We give you everything you need and you provide a little love and a place to crash."

The shelter is one of 50 that were selected from across the country. The last time they competed was in 2010.

This is the fifth and final 100K challenge.
