HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

More than two dozen men, mostly from Hattiesburg's Crosspoint Community Church, took part in a Good Friday tradition which they said helped to demonstrate the true meaning of Easter.

They took turns carrying a 150-pound, wooden cross for about seven miles along Highway 98 from the Chik-Fil-A Restaurant to their church on Highway 589.

Participants said they wanted to remember the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

"When you're carrying the cross, you wonder what He went through when He was on the cross," said Lee Harrison, 88, who was the first church member to carry the cross. "It gives you a different feeling and it's just a pleasure to carry it and thank God for what He did while He was on the cross for us," Harrison said.

"Each man (carried) it approximately 100 yards and then (we rotated) out," said Dean Register, senior pastor of Crosspoint Community Church. "It gives everybody the opportunity to get under the weight of the cross and just feel the humility of it and it's just such a reverent, humbling time for all of us," he said.

"It's a far-cry from what actually happened 2,000 years ago," said Kevin Harrison, another church member. "It's just a way of witnessing to other people and letting them know that we recognize the pain and sacrifice that Christ went through for us," he said.

They were escorted by Hattiesburg Police and the Lamar County Sheriff's Dept.
