TEXARKANA, AR (KSLA) -

A former police chief and public safety official in Southwest Arkansas has passed away.

John H. Butler, who served the city of Texarkana, AR for 34 years, died Thursday. He began working with the Texarkana Arkansas Police Department in 1956 and served as police chief and director of public safety for the city during his tenure.

"Throughout his duration of service he proved to be an exceptional chief who always had in mind the best interest of every citizen of Texarkana," said Officer Kristi Mitchell in a statement.

"In addition this genuine interest was observed in the way he led his men and women of the department. Chief Butler's attitude and dedication has long lived on within the police department and will forever remain."
