GRAMBLING, LA. (KNOE 8 New/KSLA) - Students at Grambling State University will hold a vigil on campus Thursday morning in honor of a student whose body was found in a Lafayette Park over the weekend.

Alexandria Shelton's body was found at a Lafayette Park on Saturday evening. Lafayette Police say that the scene was suspicious, however, a preliminary coroner's report has since declared the death an accidental drowning.

School officials say that students approached the administration about the vigil, and were given permission.

The vigil will be at 11:00 AM Thursday on The Yard, between Barnes & Noble bookstore and Tiger Express.

GSU spokesman Will Sutton says the vigil is open to the public and will occur in The Yard, outside the Barnes & Noble bookstore. A balloon release also will occur after the ceremony.

Sutton says students can call the Foster-Johnson Counseling Center if needed at 318-274-3277.

In addition, those who'd like to contribute to a burial fund for Shelton can visit http://www.gofundme.com/8c1cfw.

Officials at GSU say that the atmosphere on campus has been solemn since the news of the death.  Shelton was set to graduate on May 9 with a criminal justice degree.
