Terry Leray Smith, 46, was arrested early Monday morning in northern Caddo Parish after a high-speed chase.
SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -
The Texas man arrested after a high-speed chase on Monday in northern Caddo Parish is now facing charges in connection with the armed robbery of a Shreveport woman just a few hours before.
Terry Leroy Smith of Spring, Texas was taken into custody early Monday morning after leading deputies on a high speed chase from DeSoto Parish to Red River Parish and then into Caddo Parish. Deputies from both agencies, along with Shreveport police, tried to stop the truck on Highway 1 South. Even with tires flattened spike strips, police say Smith continued to speed the wrong way down Youree Drive before finally jumping out in the 5600 block of Highway 1 and being taken down by a police K9.
That's when police say Smith rolled over and pointed a loaded handgun at officers. He was shot in the foot and leg and taken to University Health.
Since the arrest, police say they have been working to piece together whether Smith was connected to the armed robbery of a woman in the 9500 block of Ellerbe Road just before 10 p.m. Sunday night.
The woman told officers she had just pulled into the parking lot of a business at the intersection of Ellerbe Road and Flournoy-Lucas when she was approached by a man who tried to talk to her before pulling out a handgun and demanded she hand over her valuables.
She says she struggled with the man over the gun before he took off with her purse in a dark colored pickup truck, firing a single shot into the woman's tire and disabling her vehicle before speeding away.
On Wednesday, authorities say they got their answer after several items stolen from the woman during the armed robbery were found inside the vehicle that was driven by Smith, 46.
Detectives have now charged Smith with a single count of armed robbery in addition to an unrelated theft charge. Smith remains under a guarded hospital stay as a result of injuries he sustained during his attempts to flee from officers.
