NSU's Oller named Southland Pitcher of Week

NATCHITOCHES, LA (NSU Sports Information) -

After he led the Northwestern State baseball team with a complete-game shutout in the first of a three-contest set against McNeese State, Adam Oller was named as the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week the league office announced Monday.

Oller is Northwestern State's first Pitcher of the Week since Colin Bear won the award in the first week of 2011.

The freshman right-hander threw 113 pitches on the way to his fourth win on the mound.  He gave up only six hits and one walk, and struck out six Cowboys in the 3-0 victory for the Demons that helped set the tone for the weekend.

"I can't say enough about Adam Oller and the way he competed," said head coach Lane Burroughs.  "He went after a great offensive club, and one of the best in our league."

His win helped the Demons win their fifth straight series and staked a claim in a three-way tie for first place in the league standings.

The Conroe, Texas, native never faced more than four batters in an inning, and held McNeese to the minimum at-bats five times.  It was his second complete-game shutout and third game to pitch nine innings.

He held the Cowboys to a .194 batting average and lowered his season earned run average to 2.03.

Oller was the first of two freshmen to shutout McNeese State in the series.  Austin Tanner did so in the Sunday game on eight hits.

"We're very proud of them and the way they attacked," said Burroughs.  "Great job from true freshmen, and they stepped up when we needed them. I can't say enough about them and how proud we are of them."

NSU will host a midweek game against Louisiana-Monroe on Tuesday at 6:30, and will turn its sight back to league play with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.  The Corpus Christi series will start at 6:30 on Thursday, and finish at 6:30 on Friday and 1 o'clock on Saturday.
