Shreveport Police are investigating an armed robbery that led to a high speed chase Monday morning.

Police say just after 10:00 p.m. Sunday, officers were called to the 9500 block of Ellerbe Road relative to an armed robbery.  When they arrived, they made contact with a woman who said she had just been robbed by a man who was armed with a handgun.

The victim says after pulling into the parking lot of a business at the intersection of Ellerbe Road and Flournoy-Lucas Road, she was approached by a man who attempted to engage in conversation with her. The woman told officers that the suspect, described as a male of approximately five feet ten inches to six feet tall and weighing roughly 160 pounds, pulled out a handgun and demanded she hand over her valuables.

Police say the woman and the suspect began to struggle over the gun, at which point the suspect overpowered the victim and stole her purse.

Upon taking the victim's purse, the suspect, who was last seen driving a dark colored pickup truck, reportedly sped off, firing a single shot into the woman's tire disabling her vehicle.   The woman escaped injury in the incident.

Around 11:30 p.m., information was gathered that the victim's stolen credit card had been used at a business in Desoto Parish.  Shortly thereafter, a man fitting the description of the robbery suspect was spotted by Desoto Parish Sheriff's deputies driving a dark colored pickup truck similar to the one described in the robbery.  In apparent attempts to elude Desoto Parish authorities, the driver of the truck led deputies on a high speed chase into the city limits of Shreveport.

Shreveport Police officers assisted in the pursuit, which ended around 2 a.m. just outside the city limits of Shreveport near the 5600 block of North Market Street (Highway 1 North).

Police say 46-year-old Terry Leroy Smith was taken into police custody.  Smith was transported to a local hospital for injuries received as a result of the pursuit.  At this stage of the investigation, Shreveport Police Robbery detectives are piecing together information and evidence to determine Smith's role in the robbery of the woman on Sunday evening.
