DURHAM, N.C. -

Finding an affordable place to live in Durham is becoming a struggle for many.

Selina Mack, executive director of Durham Community Land Trustees, said many apartment complexes around the city have closed leaving fewer Section 8 housing units.

“The supply is not there. There's really a high demand for people needing affordable housing and it's not being addressed here in this community," Mack said.

Durham Community Land Trustees is a non-profit dedicated to supplying housing that is and always will be affordable. The organization has around 150 rental properties around the Bull City.

Durham Community Land Trustees now has a wait list of more than 100 people.

Melissa Lopez Garcia is a single mom of three children who just moved into a new place two weeks ago thanks to Durham Community Land Trustees.

"It means to me that me and my children get to live in a nice house for reasonable price,” Lopez said.

She said a three-bedroom home in Durham usually runs around $900.

“So, $800 for a three bedroom, two bath brand-new house is wonderful," Lopez said.

Mack knows Durham Community Land Trustees can’t provide affordable rental housing for all that need it in Durham.

“But what we can offer is very quality housing at a good price that's being well maintained," Mack said.
