Haughton man killed after falling from I20 overpass

A Haughton man has died after falling from an interstate overpass and into the path of oncoming traffic on I20.

According to Louisiana State Police, it happened around 11:40 p.m. Friday at mile post 33 in Haughton.

The preliminary investigation revealed that 27-year-old Kevin McCarl fell from the LA 157 overpass onto I20 eastbound travel lanes. A vehicle approaching McCarl saw him in the roadway, and was able to avoid hitting him. A 1996 Jeep driven by 54-year-old Gwendolyn Baker of Monroe was following behind the vehicle that avoided McCarl. Baker applied her brakes but was unable to avoid hitting McCarl.

It's not known how or why McCarl fell from the overpass.

McCarl was pronounced dead at the scene by the Bossier Parish Coroner's Office. Baker was not injured and was wearing her seatbelt.

Toxicology samples were obtained from McCarl as well as Baker and will be submitted for analysis. State police say the crash remains under investigation.

In a statement releasing the information on McCarl's death, state police say "walking upon the travel lanes of a highway, especially at night is dangerous and should be avoided. A majority of pedestrian fatalities, nearly 70 percent, occur at night. Pedestrians are encouraged to wear light colored clothing, reflective materials, and to carry a flashlight at night." Additional pedestrian safety information may be found online at www.walkinginfo.org.

Troop G has investigated 4 fatal crashes this year which have resulted in 4 deaths.
