Birhan Nebebew wins the 37th Annual Cooper River Bridge Run

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - Birhan Nebebew, 19, of Ethiopia has won the 37th Annual Cooper River Bridge 10k in Charleston.

Nebebew finished with a time of 28:30:70 with Mourad Marofit from Morocco taking second place with a time of 28:41:70, and in third place was Julius Kogo of Kenya with a time of 28:45:05.

Azmera Gebru of Ethiopia was the winner on the women's side. The 21 year old finished with a time of 32:14.

Alexandre Dupont won the Male Wheelchair race with a time of 25:20:00 with Cassie Mitchell of Atlanta winning the Female Wheelchair race with a time of 43:14:17.

According to race officials, nearly 40,000 people crossed over the Arthur Ravenel Bridge for the bridge run that began at 8 a.m. on Coleman Boulevard in Mount Pleasant and ended in downtown Charleston.

Shuttle busses were running smoothly from the North Charleston Coliseum to Mount Pleasant early Saturday morning with no problems being reported.

This year, organizers increased law enforcement presence for the event with more security at the start and finish of the race. The Charleston County Sheriff's Office says K-9s from all over the state came to ensure safety for the run.

Last year, Simon Ndirangu won the bridge run with a running time of 28:05. Ndirangu also won the race in 2010. The Cooper River Bridge Run, now running in its 37th year, started on April 2, 1978 with Benji Durden of Atlanta winning the race.

EDITOR'S NOTE: There was a misprint in the 37th Annual Cooper River Bridge Run press guide that transposed two runners names and bib numbers leading to some initial confusion about the winner's identity when he crossed the finish line.
